Gout is the most painful!

雙能量電腦掃描(DECT): 綠色為尿酸晶體

When people reach middle age, it seems that more and more people are suffering from pain. The prevalence of pain in Hong Kong has been increasing over the past 10 years. For example, the prevalence of pain in 2016 was 2.9%, which is similar to that in Western development countries. Among the adult population in the United States, the prevalence rate is about 4%, mainly affecting men in the 30s to 50s. Today, it has become the most common crystal kinesthetic disease.

Acute gouty arthritis refers to arthritis caused by the presence of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals (also known as uric acid) in soft tissues and joints. The first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint is usually affected first. Early recognition and diagnosis of the disease and provision of appropriate measures can reduce joint damage and tendon rupture. The identification of negatively birefringent MSU crystals from synovial fluid aspirates under polarization microscopy is still considered the "gold standard" for the diagnosis of gout. However, this diagnostic method is invasive and not suitable for everyone; if there is insufficient synovial fluid, it is no longer feasible.

Dual-energy computer scan (DECT) is a new diagnostic development for gouty arthritis. Because this method is non-invasive, its use has become increasingly widespread in recent years. DECT can detect and quantify urate crystals before joints are destroyed, helping clinicians to diagnose and follow up early. In contrast, traditional X-rays cannot see bone transformation until the joint is destroyed. Dual-energy computer scanning can also diagnose renal colic caused by urate stones, which can help doctors find more problems and control them as early as possible.

Of course, it's best to take precautions before they happen. It is very important to live a healthy life and develop the habit of exercising every day. A vegetarian diet and a low-purine diet will definitely help avoid gout.
