EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging

The standing EOS full-body weight-bearing X-ray imaging system provides clear 3D image data of the spine, hips, and knee joints. This advanced technology assists our medical team in examining, diagnosing, and managing conditions such as scoliosis and leg length discrepancies.
Furthermore, the EOS system features a low radiation dose—reducing radiation exposure by 50% to 85% compared to conventional digital X-rays. This makes it a highly reassuring imaging option, particularly for pediatric patients.

EOS Low Dose X-ray Imaging System

As the third EOS imaging system in Hong Kong, and the very first in the private healthcare sector, Hong Kong Advanced Imaging (HKAI) has introduced the EOS system to the private market. In short, EOS imaging represents a pioneer in X-ray technology for the spine and lower limbs. Through Nobel Prize-winning patented technology, the EOS system reduces radiation dose by 50% to 85% compared to digital X-rays, and by up to 95% compared to traditional CT scans. The machine performs imaging while the patient is in an upright position, analyzing the patient's static gait and posture. By simultaneously capturing frontal and lateral views of the spine, and then processing the collected information, a single scan taking just 20 seconds can create a detailed 3D 1:1 model. Following the golden rule of X-ray imaging – "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA principle), while simultaneously improving image quality and providing 3D models, the EOS imaging system will become an indispensable part of the future of X-ray technology.

HKAI is the only healthcare centre in Hong Kong equipped with the EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging.

This equipment combines the Nobel Prize-winning particle detector concept with the breakthrough development of innovative linear scanning technology. Featuring a low radiation dose, full-body weight-bearing X-ray scanning, and 3D bone reconstruction, the EOS system can quickly and accurately capture X-ray images, making it particularly suitable for areas such as the spine, hips, and knee joints. Furthermore, the EOS system can image patients in sitting, standing, or even squatting positions, thereby more realistically reflecting the skeletal condition under different circumstances to help our medical team provide patients with more comprehensive diagnoses, assessments, and recommended management plans.

Procedures

The EOS standing full-body weight-bearing X-ray imaging system takes only 7 seconds to capture each image, which is 3 times faster than conventional digital systems, making the examination simpler and faster. Patients only need to stand during the examination, and the system will automatically reconstruct 3D images, helping to assess the patient's condition more precisely in order to formulate conservative management or treatment plans. Since the system can capture frontal and lateral views simultaneously, patients do not need to receive additional radiation doses from repeated imaging, with the radiation dose being significantly reduced by about 60% to 90% compared to traditional X-rays.

Scoliosis
Scoliosis EOS Screening

Scoliosis Assessment

Approximately 3% of the population in Hong Kong has scoliosis, with patients predominantly being adolescents aged 10 to 15. As scoliosis can lead to various complications, early examination, detection, and management are essential. The newly introduced EOS scoliosis examination technology in Hong Kong offers a lower radiation dose compared to traditional X-rays and features a remarkably fast examination time, helping to precisely diagnose the condition of patients with scoliosis.

The standing EOS full-body weight-bearing X-ray scan is an X-ray technology from France. The equipment combines the Nobel Prize-winning particle detector concept with the breakthrough development of innovative linear scanning technology, allowing for simultaneous frontal and lateral imaging of the patient. Featuring a low radiation dose, full-body weight-bearing X-ray scanning, and 3D bone reconstruction, EOS X-ray imaging can quickly and accurately capture X-ray images. The acquired data is analyzed by software to convert 2D data into 3D data, rendering a three-dimensional representation of the patient's entire skeletal condition. This allows our medical team to fully grasp the patient's scoliosis situation, including determining whether abnormalities in the hip and knee joints are the underlying cause of the scoliosis. This one-stop, specialized examination technology for diagnosing scoliosis helps the medical team provide patients with more comprehensive diagnoses, assessments, and recommended management plans.

The EOS standing full-body weight-bearing X-ray scan is particularly suitable for areas such as the spine, hips, and knee joints. Furthermore, the EOS system can image patients in sitting, standing, or even squatting positions, thereby more realistically reflecting the skeletal condition under different circumstances to assist in diagnosis, assessment, and recommending management plans.

EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging Q&A

  • Children with trunk asymmetry in development
  • People with scoliosis
  • People with distorted waist during their juvenile development
  • People with distorted waist because of scoliosis
  • People with the distorted pelvis
  • People with muscular and neurological problems

The EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging delivers 60-90% less radiation as compared with traditional X-rays. It is capable of simultaneous capture of biplanar X-ray images by slot scanning of the whole body to generate a 3D image of the bones using low radiation doses. It is particularly useful for places like the spine, hip and knee joints. EOS imaging enables our specialists to provide a better diagnosis, evaluation, and comprehensive treatment plan for the patients in a more comprehensive manner, as the imaging technology can better reflect the condition of the bones in different circumstances such as when sitting, standing or crouching.

The EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging takes only 7 seconds to capture an image, which is 3 times faster than the conventional screening system, making the screening procedure simpler and faster.

The EOS Full-body X-ray Imaging uses low radiation doses and is suitable for children.
