Protecting "Little Buddy" in Winter: Remember These 4 Things

Summer heat is a no-no, and so is the cold winter chill. Men's testicles, it turns out, are a group that dislikes both extremes! As we enter winter, many men may experience their "little buddy" shrinking and feel instantly anxious, worrying about any potential issues with this vital part of their manhood.

Why Do Testicles Shrink in Cold Weather?

The testicles are responsible for sperm production and secretion of male hormones. They require an environment that is 2 to 3℃ lower than body temperature to produce healthy sperm. This is why they have their own temperature-regulating and defense mechanisms. When the temperature of the testicles rises too high, it can negatively impact sperm viability. The contraction and relaxation of the scrotum, spermatic cord, and surrounding muscles play a crucial role in controlling the contact between the testicles and the body, ensuring a constant temperature.

In hot weather, the scrotum and spermatic cord relax and hang down to facilitate heat dissipation. Conversely, in cold weather or when the skin is exposed to external stimuli, the scrotum and spermatic cord contract and pull up, bringing the testicles closer to the body's core and raising their temperature. It's normal for the penis and scrotum to appear smaller in cold conditions, so there's no need to be overly concerned.

Beware of Two Reproductive System Conditions Knocking at Your Door

However, low temperatures can increase the risk of conditions such as varicocele and testicular torsion in men, exacerbating symptoms or affecting testicular blood flow, leading to testicular shrinkage, and even fertility issues. These conditions should never be overlooked.

.Varicocele: This condition occurs when veins in the scrotum become enlarged and twisted due to blood pooling. It can affect one or both testicles, causing a sensation of heaviness or it might feel like a “bag of worms”. In severe cases, surgical treatment may be necessary.

.Testicular Torsion: This is an acute condition where the spermatic cord supporting the testicles rotates or twists excessively, often due to significant temperature changes. This can disrupt blood flow to the scrotum, leading to ischemia. If the condition cannot be resolved within 6 hours of onset, surgical removal of the affected testicle may be necessary.

4 Tips to Protect Your Testicles in Winter

1. Layer up for warmth: Opt for underwear that provides good coverage and insulation. This helps maintain blood circulation to the penis and protects the testicles from cold winds, reducing discomfort.

2. Limit consumption of stimulating foods: Foods such as lamb, duck, bamboo shoots, and spicy items that have a stimulating effect should be consumed in moderation. These foods have the potential to increase secretion at the inflamed site, worsening symptoms of testicular inflammation and further affecting testicular function.

3. Stay hydrated: Drinking an adequate amount of water helps reduce the risk of urinary tract infections and maintains normal functioning of the reproductive system.

4. Avoid prolonged hot baths: Taking a long, hot bath may be enjoyable during winter, but immersing the testicles in water exceeding 40℃ for an extended period of time can potentially damage their sperm production function.

If you suspect or notice any abnormal conditions in the testicles or reproductive organs, it is important to seek medical attention and undergo a thorough examination.
