Dual Threat of Influenza and COVID-19: Seizing the Golden Time to Guard Against Viruses

Hong Kong finds itself at the crossroads of an impending flu season and the persistent presence of COVID-19. As the peak of the flu season approaches and the winter months foster increased activity of the novel coronavirus, it is imperative not to underestimate the risks posed by both viruses. According to a survey conducted by 12 medical associations and organizations in Hong Kong and Macau, vaccination rates for infants aged 6 months to 3 years are alarmingly low. There is growing concern that simultaneous infections of both viruses could lead to severe complications in children. Parents are urged to seize the opportunity before the peak period and ensure timely vaccination for their children.

Deadly Combination: Dual Threat of COVID-19 and Influenza

In addition to infants, high-risk groups susceptible to contracting both influenza and COVID-19 include pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. Research indicates that without vaccination, the body may require an extended period to generate antibodies, leaving individuals more susceptible to other diseases.

When individuals from high-risk groups contract both viruses simultaneously, their weakened immune systems, worn down by prolonged mask-wearing over the past three years, are more vulnerable. This is particularly true for young children who may have had limited exposure to the influenza virus, resulting in lower antibody levels. Such cases increase the risk of severe illness, complications (such as bronchitis, pneumonia, myocarditis, etc.), and even death.

Some may believe that influenza has waned in recent years, overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the reality is quite different. Australia is currently grappling with its most severe flu season in five years. From April to October, over 220,000 flu cases have been reported, resulting in more than 300 deaths and over a thousand hospitalizations. Similarly, the United States is witnessing a sharp rise in flu cases since late September, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warning of a severe flu season ahead. In light of these developments, it is strongly advised for parents to proactively vaccinate their children against both COVID-19 and influenza to safeguard their health.

Preventing the Flu: Key Measures You Need to Know

To combat the influenza virus, the best approach is to take preventive measures, ensuring that the flu virus has no way to invade.

-Get the appropriate flu vaccine (such as the quadrivalent flu vaccine and painless nasal spray flu vaccine).

-Wash hands frequently and maintain personal hygiene.

-Wash hands after sneezing, coughing, or cleaning the nose.

-Minimize visits to crowded and congested places.

-Maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest.

-Keep the air circulating for better ventilation.

When children exhibit symptoms of the flu, it is important that they refrain from attending school and instead focus on getting ample rest and staying hydrated. If the symptoms persist or worsen, immediate consultation with a pediatrician is advised to ensure the child receives appropriate treatment.
