Vegetarianism leads to a healthy life

A patient once asked me, "Doctor, can I avoid getting sick?" My answer is: Yes! If you invest well in your health, chronic diseases or cancer can be treated through a vegetarian diet and exercise. Many studies have repeatedly proven that a vegetarian diet can reduce the incidence of cancer and the recurrence rate after recovery. It is also particularly effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, fatty liver, diabetes, etc. Former US President Clinton, for example, received cardiovascular treatment due to severe narrowing of his heart blood vessels. After recovery, I became a vegetarian under the advice of a nutritionist.

In Hong Kong, many people are willing to spend a lot of time working and investing to make money, but forget to take time for exercise. Even though I know that red meat and cured meat can cause cancer, I still don’t want to quit eating them. Rather than spending time on treatment after getting sick, it is better to prevent it before it happens and avoid the pain of getting sick.

A 40-year-old surgeon was admitted to the hospital suddenly suffering an acute stroke while he was undergoing treatment. And I was the doctor who analyzed theMRI scansof his brain. The imaging showed that he had a minor stroke on the right side of his brain, but the blood vessels were not narrowed and he needed to be controlled with medication. The next day, I took the liberty to visit him, curious as to why he suffered a stroke at such a young age. It was also obvious that he had exercise habits and had not gained any weight in middle age. His answer was that he did not quit eating properly and his blood lipids were not well controlled, which led to his stroke this time. Later, I gave him a vegetarian book, suggesting that he could slowly improve his health starting from his diet, and also introduced him to different vegetarian restaurants and vegetarian dishes. Let him know that vegetarian food can be full of choices and delicious food. We never knew each other, but eventually became friends through vegetarian food.

Many people have the misconception that being vegetarian can lead to physical weakness. In fact, many top international athletes are also vegetarians to improve their performance. Including former American track and field champion Lewis, who did better than before after becoming a vegetarian. As long as you know the correct way to eat vegetarian food, you can absorb protein from beans and supplement the nutrition of meat.

Recently, the issue of vegetarianism and environmental protection has been discussed. Animal husbandry produces a large amount of global warming gases and causes water pollution. Supporting a vegetarian diet can help reduce the rate of climate warming. For me personally, the main purpose of being vegetarian is to alleviate animal suffering. The above-mentioned are all the advantages of vegetarianism, and being vegetarian is a responsible behavior for yourself, your family, future generations, and even the entire planet.
