It is located in the head and below the throat, and is one of the main endocrine organs. The thyroid hormone it secretes is very important for heartbeat blood pressure, digestive function, energy retention, brain development, bone health and muscle control. Therefore, when the secretion of thyroid hormone is insufficient, it may make you tired and even your weight suddenly rises. What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism (commonly known as hypothyroidism) is caused by the thyroid gland secreting too little thyroxine, which slows down metabolic function and may be difficult for patients to detect. "Healthline" reported1010 symptoms of hypothyroidism. Do you pay attention to them in your daily life?

1) Feeling tired

One of the common symptoms of hypothyroidism is feeling tired. Thyroid hormone controls energy balance and can affect your vitality. A 1998 study found that hibernating animals have low thyroid levels, allowing them to sleep for long periods of time. People with high thyroid hormone levels may feel nervous and upset; conversely, people with low thyroid hormone levels may feel extremely tired and sluggish.

A 2010 study found that 138 people with hypothyroidism reported feeling tired and reducing their activity. At the same time, it was also stated that their motivation was low and they felt mentally fatigued. People with hypothyroidism may feel lack of rest even if they sleep for longer periods of time. So if you feel more sleepy than usual, it could be a symptom of insufficient thyroid hormone.

2) Weight gain

Unusual weight gain is also a common symptom of hypothyroidism. In addition to being less active, it may also mean that the patient's liver, muscle, and fat tissue are storing calories. When thyroid levels are low, metabolism changes its pattern. Growth and activity burn calories, but the energy used at rest, or basal metabolic rate, drops, and as a result, the body tends to store calories from the diet as fat. Therefore, when thyroid hormone is low, even the same amount of calories can lead to weight gain.

A 2011 study found that patients newly diagnosed with hypothyroidism gained an average of 7 to 14 kilograms in weight within a year of being diagnosed. If you find yourself gaining weight, you should first consider whether there are new changes in your life that may have led to this result. However, if you eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly, but suddenly gain weight, you should consult a doctor to find out the reason behind it.

3) Chill

Heat energy is the product of burning calories. When you exercise, you feel hot because you are burning calories. In fact, when you sit down, you are burning a small amount of calories. However, when you have hypothyroidism, your basal metabolic rate decreases, thus producing less heat energy.

In addition, thyroid hormones promote the homeostasis of brown fat, which is a fat that specializes in producing heat, especially in cold weather, helping to maintain body heat. However, hypothyroidism prevents brown fat from performing its function. As a result, the patient may feel colder than the person next to them. A 1997 study found that about 40% of patients with hypothyroidism experienced more chills than usual.

Of course, if you find that you are always more afraid of the cold than others, that may not be a problem. However, if you find yourself suddenly feeling chills, you should be aware that it may be a symptom of hypothyroidism.

4) Muscle and joint pain

Low thyroid hormones cause metabolism to shift to catabolism, which means the body breaks down tissues, such as muscles, to obtain energy. During catabolism, muscle strength decreases, so you feel weak, and the process of breaking down muscle tissue can also cause pain.

A 1997 study found that while everyone feels weak from time to time, people with hypothyroidism are twice as likely to feel weak as healthy people. In addition, about 34% of patients experience muscle pain when they have not been active recently. Another 2012 study found that 35 hypothyroid patients who replaced low levels of thyroid hormone with levothyroxine, a synthetic thyroid hormone, experienced increased muscle strength and less pain than those who received no medical treatment.

It is normal to feel weak or have pain after exercise or strenuous activities. However, if you find that you have new and increasing pain or weakness, you should seek medical advice.

5) Hair loss

Hair follicles, like most cells, are regulated by thyroid hormones. Hair follicles contain short-lived stem cells that are replaced rapidly, so hair follicles are more responsive to low thyroid levels than other tissues.

Low levels of thyroid hormone cause hair follicles to stop reproducing, thus causing hair loss. Hair loss generally improves after receiving thyroid remission. A 2013 study found that about 25–30% of patients who consulted about hair loss also had hypothyroidism; among these people, hypothyroidism increased to 40% for those aged 40 or above.

6) Dry and itchy skin

Skin cells, like hair follicles, turn over rapidly and are therefore sensitive to changes in thyroid hormones. Once the normal skin renewal cycle is disrupted, it may take longer for the skin to grow back. This also means that the outer layer of the skin will last longer and accumulate damage. The dead skin may take longer to fall off, causing the skin to become dry.

A 1997 study noted that 74% of patients with hypothyroidism reported dry skin. A 2011 study also found that 50% of hypothyroid patients also reported that their skin had gotten worse in the past year. If your skin suddenly changes, and it's not caused by sensitivity or new skin care products, it could be caused by your thyroid.

However, autoimmune diseases can occasionally cause hypothyroidism and can affect the skin, causing myxedema (red and swollen skin). Therefore, if you find skin problems, you should seek medical advice to find out the exact cause.

7）Feeling depressed

The cause is unclear, but hypothyroidism is linked to depression, possibly due to poor overall energy and health. A 2015 study found that 64% of women and 57% of men with hypothyroidism reported experiencing depression. At the same time, more than half of the patients also experienced anxiety.

If you often feel depressed, you can consult a doctor to help you resolve your emotional problems and find out the reasons for your depression.

8) Inability to concentrate or poor memory

Many patients with hypothyroidism report having trouble concentrating, and the situation varies from person to person. A 1997 study found that 22% of patients with hypothyroidism said they gradually found it difficult to face daily math problems; 36% of patients said they thought slower than usual; and 39% noted that their memory had become worse.

A 2001 study found that although the cause of low thyroid levels affecting memory is unclear, it was found that memory problems improved after receiving thyroid relief.

9) Constipation

Low thyroid levels can also affect colon function. A 1997 study found that constipation affects 17% of people with hypothyroidism, but only 10% of people with normal thyroid levels. The same study found that 20% of people with hypothyroidism reported worsening constipation, compared with only 6% of people with euthyroid levels.

Although constipation is one of the common symptoms of hypothyroidism, few patients only experience this symptom, so there is no need to worry too much when constipation occurs. If constipation persists, you should seek medical advice to resolve the problem.

10) Menstrual disorders or heavy menstrual flow

Irregular menstruation or heavy menstrual flow are also related to hypothyroidism. A 1997 study pointed out that about 40% of female patients with hypothyroidism had experienced menstrual irregularities or an increase in heavy menstrual flow in the past year. However, only 26% of women with normal thyroid levels had the same problem. In addition, a 1999 study also found that about 30% of women with hypothyroidism have irregular menstruation or heavy menstruation.

Thyroid hormones influence other hormones that control menstruation and can directly affect the ovaries and uterus. Of course, there are many reasons for menstrual irregularities or heavy menstruation, so if the condition affects your health or daily life, you should seek medical advice to find out the root cause.

(Source: Healthline, 1998 study, 2010 study, 2011 study, 1997 study, 2012 study, 2013 study, 2011 study, 2015 study, 2001 study, 1999
